There are 12 types of visas to enter Iran. Depending on the purpose of your visit, you can apply for the most suitable one.

Iran tourist visa is for tourists who wish to visit Iran for sightseeing purposes or visiting their family and friends, tourist visa is fine. The maximum duration of stay for a tourist visa is 30 days and you can extend it for another 2 months once you arrive to Iran.

Entry Visa is effectively a ‘business’ visa. It is a permit issued for foreign experts and businessmen/ businesswomen who travel to Iran for a limited period of time (once – twice or multiple) for economic, commercial, cultural and industrial purposes. It is also required by those attending economic or cultural conferences or those participating in sporting events. The authorized duration of stay is usually up to 30 days. Commercial visitors must obtain an invitation letter from the company/ organization they intend to visit.

Iran Treatment visa is for foreign citizens who wish to travel to Iran for medical purposes and have already received an approval letter from one of the authorized medical centers. This visa can be applied for patients with physical illnesses.

There’s a list for a few countries whose citizens can travel to Iran visa-free with the maximum days of staying in Iran without a visa:

  • Turkey: 3 months
  • China: 21 days (+11 days)
  • Egypt: 20 days
  • Macau: 21 days
  • Malaysia: 15 days
  • Azerbaijan: 30 days (+11 days)
  • Oman: 30 days (+12 days)
  • Armenia: 90 days within 180 days of each visit
  • Georgia: 45 days
  • Lebanon: 30 days
  • Bolivia: 30 days
  • Venezuela: 15 days
  • Hong Kong: 21 days
  • Syria: 90 days within 180 days of each visit

Please be noted that these nationalities can extend their stay by paying a low amount of money at the affiliated MFA offices in Iran.

Three types of Iran visas can be applied upon arrival: tourist visa, business visa and pilgrimage visa.

The citizens of UK, US, Canada, Ireland, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Somalia, Jordan, India, Iraq, Colombia, Pakistan are NOT eligible to obtain their visa upon arrival. However, EU and other nationalities can get their tourist visa on arrival at the airport

Although it’s totally possible to apply and get your visa upon arrival, to be on the safe side we recommend you apply for visa and get your authorization code before traveling.  It makes the whole process easier, shorter and safer.

Documents you need to apply for VOA:

The needed documents for VOA include: A valid passport with at least 6 months validity, a valid travel insurance for your trip to Iran, a photo to be attached to the Iran visa application form. (It’s better to bring two passport size pictures with you. Although visa offices are using digital cameras to take the needed pictures recently, but there’s no harm in having photos just in case).

Iran VOA fee:

Iran airport visa fee depends on the applicant’s nationality and will be paid at Iran Visa & Passport Office at the airport. You also need a valid travel insurance for your Iran trip when collecting your visa. Depending on your citizenship, the visa stamp fee varies from 10 to 150 Euros.

The major differences include the duration it takes for your visa issue and the documents you need to provide. As a passport holder of UK, US, Canada and Ireland, you need to submit a pre-booked tour package including all the details when applying for Iran visa. Also, a licensed tour guide must accompany you during your whole trip. The duration for your visa will take about 30-45 business days.

American citizens can get their Iran tourist visa stamped at the interest section of Iran embassy in Washington DC. In general, Iran visa is valid for one month and it can be extended up to 2 months. It’s good to know that these nationalities can travel to Iran Free Zone without visa, like citizens of all other countries.

Unfortunately, the citizens of the mentioned countries must travel to Iran applying through a licensed travel agency in Iran. They also need to book a full-guided tour for their whole trip. They cannot travel independently in Iran.

Yes. If you have a dual or multiple citizenship (except for Iranians) you can apply for Iran visa using the one with the friendliest visa condition. However, if you are an Iranian passport holder, it’s highly recommended to use your Iranian passport to apply for your Iran visa.

There are some Iranian free trade zones where all nationals (except Israel) can enter without a visa. There are international airports in Kish Island and Qeshm Island with frequent international flights. So, they can be great destinations for air travel. Other areas are best accessible by land. Keep in mind that for exiting the free zones and entering Iran, you will require a visa.

For receiving the visa in Iran’s embassy in your country you will need to have your original passport, Personal Photo, 18-digit authorization code and visa stamp fee.

You have one month to collect the Iran visa stamp in Iranian embassies / and three months to collect the Iran visa stamp in Iranian airports, from the time the visa permit is issued. From the date your passport is stamped with the visa, you have three months to enter Iran.

Those who have an Israel visa stamp on their passports (or exit stamps at the relevant Jordanian or Egyptian border crossings into Israel) can apply for an Iran visa at least one year after the expiration date of their Israeli visa.

Passport holders of Afghanistan and Bangladesh need to apply for and collect their visa at the embassies/consulates in their countries. They can’t apply for an Iran visa from travel agencies

Pakistani nationals are not eligible to get VOA. In order to get their visa, they must apply through an agency and get their visa stampe at one of Iranian embassies or consulates. It is the same for the nationals of Somalia, Colombia, Pakistan, Iraq, and Jordan.

To obtain a visa to travel to Iran, you can also refer to an Iranian embassy in person or use the website of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). However, individuals applying directly from a(n) embassy/consulate or MFA’s website are reporting very long waiting time and high rejection rates .

The Foreign Ministry in Iran do not process visa applications for one month, from around March 5 – April 5th each year. Please ensure your application is lodged outside this period.in this period, your applying process will done with a low speed.
